About this Item

1689 printing. Half Leather. Very good rebound copy. Almost 320 years old. If this was first published in 1686, this copy is a reprint. Rebound in half-leather over cloth boards. Spine with 5 bands, gilt decorated and titled "Chardin's East Indies" Date of rebinding estimated about 1880. Binding is tight and nearly fine. 1689 book shows some age with stains from moisture showing on the first several pages of the "Coronation" addenda. All illustrations and the map are nearly fine. Rare. Many beautiful plates including royal mausolees and gatefold prospects of Persian cities as they appeared in the late 17th centuries.** In 1681 the French explorer Jean-Baptiste [John] Chardin (1643-1713) finally abandoned his native France in favour of England, as he was persecuted due to his protestant faith. He was immediately knighted by Charles II, and published the first volume of his Travels in London 1686. A complete edition was not to appear until Amsterdam 1711. Chardin's extensive travelling, open-minded intelligence, and superior command of the Persian language allowed him to write what has since generally been considered one of the finest early pieces of Western scholarship on the Muslim world as well as a highly exciting piece of travel literature. Stored in sealed plastic protection. In the event of a problem, we guarantee full refund. 1689 printing. . Half Leather. Bookseller Inventory # 308109
