About this Item

MICHAUX, F[rancois] A. Travels to the Westward of the Allegany Mountains, In the States of Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and Return to Charlestown, Through the Upper Carolinas. London: J. Mawman, 1805. 1st ed. in English. xvi, 350pp. Folding map frontis. Circa 1900 paper covered boards with paper spine and printed paper spine label. Bookplate of former owner, else a near fine copy. Three editions of Michaux's Travels were published in London in 1805. The present edition, translated by B. Lambert and published by J. Mawman, is the scarcest and much preferred of the three. Michaux was commissioned by the French government in 1801 to sell his father's tree plantations in Charleston. His journey lasted from August 1801 until March 1803, during which time he travelled extensively throughout the eastern, central, and southern U.S. Among his stops were Lexington and the horse farms of Kentucky; Nashville and Jonesborough, Tennessee; Morganton, North Carolina; and Chester, Columbia, and finally Charleston, South Carolina. He comments heavily on the flora and fauna of Georgia and the Carolinas, as well as on the health of the cotton and tobacco trades. A highly interesting account of a journey during which the author compiled much information for his later work, The North American Sylva. HOWES M-579. Clark II, 106. Graff 2780.
