About this Item

With 3 folding maps (1 colored) and tables in Volume I. One of the maps on the different types of soil in France is hand-colored, and another is on the climate and navigation of France. Bound in half faux-calf over marbled boards, reinforced strips in front and back inner margins; interior and text fairly clean and in very good condition. Originally printed in one volume in 1792, this second edition has been revised and enlarged to two volumes. Young's famous Travels, his most copious work, is now recognized as the best authority for the overall condition of France on the eve of the revolution. The work had great influence on the development of British economics. Young here reports, in great detail, his travels from France into Italy, Spain and Germany describing (among other sights) the agriculture, especially cultivation of the soil in each area. He observes the vineyards, orchards, all manner of plants, vegetables and manufacturing (noting the prices at market), as well as wonderful descriptions of the people, their society, work, customs, commerce and the beauty of the land. As an early traveler, his keen observations made this work extremely valuable to historians on both sides of the Channel. Young (1741-1820), one of the most noteworthy of English writers of the time, was remarkable for his impressions on many of these unknown areas during his travels. This gave his works a permanent value as a source of information on the conditions of his time. "He applied statistical methods to the study of agriculture, investigating both the statistics of production and the costs of this particular industry. He obtained his information from a series of extensive tours in England, Ireland and France, where he studied the state of agriculture at first hand" (McCulloch, Literature of Political Economy.).
