About this Item

Bound in black cloth with titles and decorations stamped in red. First edition (stated). 288 pages. With a glossy frontispiece by F.T. Chapman. An early entry in the publisher's "Junior Mystery Club" with club's logo to the book's endpapers and the spine and rear panel of the dust wrapper. The rear panel carries the club's "wheel cipher", designed to be cut out and used to solve a puzzle. Upper corners bumped; front endpapers attached upside-down, otherwise a fine copy. The lightly rubbed dust jacket has minor edgewear with just a hint of paper loss at the spine ends and upper folds; there is a faint scribble at the lower edge of the rear panel and short closed tears at the top edge and the front and rear fold. The book is clean and unmarked, with the jacket now in mylar. A scarce book in a dust wrapper that was usually destroyed by the removal of the "wheel cipher". Claudy is well known for his contributions to Masonic culture and history. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 109571
