Richmond: West & Johnston, 1862. xxvii,[1],168pp., plus twelve folding plates, each with an inserted leaf of explanation. 12mo. Contemporary calf-backed cloth, gilt-ruled spine. Light shelfwear, cloth slightly soiled, some faint, scattered foxing, else very good. P&W 4947. "Fourth edition, revised and enlarged," and the only Confederate printing of Mahan's important and influential treatise on field fortification. Dennis Hart Mahan, noted military theorist and father of Alfred Thayer Mahan, was a professor at West Point for more than forty-five years. He published this treatise on field fortifications, his first published book, in 1836, and it went through several printings before the outbreak of the Civil War. The book had much influence in the tactical planning of both Union and Confederacy. For example, the Union's disposition on Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg is very closely sited according to Mahan's recommendations for disrupting an opponent's artillery fire. "The standard work on this subject carried into the field by United States officers in both the Mexican and Civil wars" DAB. Bookseller Inventory # 69824
