About this Item

8vo. xii, 272, 40 (ads.) pp. Errata sheet tipped in. Grey cloth, gilt-stamped spine title; library slips removed from rear endleaves, small black stain on rear cover. Exlib ink stamp (pg. xi: "Chief Astronomer, Dept. of the Interior, Canada"), "withdrawn" stamp on title-page. Fine. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Originally published as Vorlesungen über Thermodynamik (1897). "The bulk of [Planck's] systematic work may be divided into thermodynamics, radiation theory, relativity, and philosophy of science. The first culminated in his Vorlesungen über Thermodynamik⦠Several principal features characterize Planck's treatment of [thermodynamics], his earliest field of research. Aside from his extremely consistent procedure for extending the theory of cyclic processes to an arbitrary number of arbitrary bodies in 1879, Planck at that time preferred to base his analysis on the distinction between neutral and natural (irreversible) processes⦠Planck's Vorlesungen was effective for more than thirty years as an exceptionally clear, systematic, and skillful presentation of thermodynamics." [DSB]. Provenance: Possibly the copy of William Frederick King (1854-1916), chief astronomer and International Boundary commissioner, Canada. See: Report of the chief Astronomer for the year ending 1902. King entered the Canadian Government as a land surveyor and topographer in 1872 at the age of 18. He worked on federal lands in western Canada where his knowledge of astronomy was an asset during mapping as it allowed him to determine the longitudes and latitudes of many locations. His efforts to create a large and permanent astronomical observatory bore fruit in 1905 with the inauguration of the Dominion Observatory in Ottawa. DSB, Vol. XI, pp. 7-15.
