First edition. Hardcover in dark brown cloth lettered in gilt. Frontispiece portrait engravings of the author. 264 pp. A tight, very good example, spine sunned and boards lightly rubbed. Edith O'gorman, otherwise popularly known as "The Escaped Nun" , was born in Ireland in 1842, emigrated to American at age 20 and joined the Sisters of Charity. She left, or "escaped' the convent some six years later and in 1871 published this account of the alleged cruelties to which she was subjected during her stay. She became a lecturer, speaking out against convent life in particular and Catholicism generally. She travelled to england in 1881. Bookseller Inventory # GE15365
