About this title

Excerpt from The Tripp Family

After a careful research the farthest back we can trace our family is to James Tripp, whose parents' names were William and Philadelphia. He was born in the state of Rhode Island about the year 1763, and was married to Margaret Green of the same state, who was born in 1767. They located their youthful home in Washington County, N.Y., where they built themselves a house of logs and covered it with plank split from straight-grained timber which was plentiful at that time, while sawmills were scarce. The roof was covered with bark pealed from logs, and to keep the bark in place and prevent it rolling up as it dried, poles were placed across it and secured by boring auger holes and driving wooden pins through them. I have been told such roofs would shed water nicely for a number of years I presume this roof lasted until lumber could be sawed and shingles made to replace it, and probably a part of their land cleared so that they could raise their living.
