About this Item

Rendered into modern English verse by George Philip Krapp. London: Printed for the Limited Editions Club, 1939. Quarto, hardcover, quarter white canvas and pale green boards. 334 pages, with text set in Granjon type and printed letterpress on Malling Mills special paper. Designed by George W. Jones, who has provided a brilliant double-spread title-page composition using vintage historiated initial letters printed in three colors. Edition limited to 1500 copies printed by Ernest Ingham at the Fanfare Press, London. Signed by the designer, George W. Jones. A fine copy. Everyone knows Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' but far fewer are familiar with 'Troilus and Cressida,' a verse romance that some critics consider to be Chaucer's finest work. It is the love story of Troilus, son of the Trojan king Priam, and Cressida, widowed daughter of the deserter priest Calchas, who are united in love, then tragically separated.
