487 p. Black pebbled leather flexible boards, gray end papers. 5x7.25in. Gold stamped front, spine titles. 14 B&W photo plates inc. frontispiece. RARE Harness racing compilation, a companion volume to "Pacealong" and "Racealong". Includes history and important names of horses, owners, trainers, races and tracks, changes in the sport. The horse, "Peter Manning" in full profile as frontispiece. Diagrams of half-mile and mile tracks. Begins with history of the American horse and its history since 1539 when DeSoto brought to Florida 237 cavalry horses, pack horses, and mules. New England's first 25 horses arrived in Boston in 1629, more followed. In Rhode Island, an early diary entry, 1721, record a mile pacing in 2 to 3 minutes. By 1747, some laws against or limiting racing were being passed. Good. No dust jacket as issued. Signed by previous owner. Prior owner name penciled, t.p., "Ralph Knight". Red crayon marks "+" at page tops near front, not obscuring text, and frontispiece scribble. Separating started at title page. Half first free. First edition. Presumed 1st. No indicators.
