Book Description New York, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1951, 1951. FIRST US EDITION. Octavo (20 x 15cm), pp.421; [3]. Bound in publisher's green cloth, blind stamped "Sartre" to front board, with gilt titles and publisher's imprint to spine, top-edge tinted blue, front edge untrimmed. In green dust-jacket designed by Warren Chappell, titles and a depiction of the dejected main characters to front cover, titles to spine, and a biography of Sartre as a blurb to rear cover; originally priced $3.50. Internally clean and free from spotting. The binding is firm and tight, spine ends somewhat rolled, spine gilt somewhat burnished. Dust-wrapper is presentable, with minor chips, tears, and rubbing to edges and spine ends, rear jacket somewhat toned. The final novel of the Road to Freedom series, which concerns the fall of France to the Nazis in 1940. The series was intended to be a tetralogy, but Sartre could not complete it, and thus this is the last book. The novel revolves around an apathetic socialist philosopher teacher and his circle, which is plainly a thinly-veiled autobiography - 'I gave Mathieu everything of mine - I don't mean the facts of his life, but his character except the essential thing, which is that I lived in order to write'.
