About this Item

Green cloth, 262 pps.; illustrations. LAID IN IS A SHORT NOTE IN INK "RENT FOR JUNE 1899/ RECEIVED/ (signed) LOTTA CRABTREE". Entertaining biography of Lotta Crabtree, the performer and personality who became known as "The Fairy Star of The Gold Rush" and "The California Diamond". Crabtree arrived in the California gold fields at age 5 and began dancing in the mining camps at age 8. She and her family moved to San Francisco when she was 9 and Lotta continued to attract much attention on the stage for a number of years. Several years later she came east and was a sensation in the Broadway music halls. As can be imagined, the beautiful performer was ardently persued but never married; her mother, and later she herself, invested in California real estate. She retired to New Jersey, a wealthy woman, at age 45. A very good copy; copyright page bears the imprint "Published August, 1928" but a less than scrupulous previous owner has apparently (and rather transparently) erased the "second printing" line beneath it. No dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # D8603
