About this Item

Pages clean except for a few fingerprint-sized brown smudges among the pages and the occasional short handling crease; no owners' marks; binding appears rather relaxed, with shaken hinges, but pages are mildly rippled along the bound edge. Pictorial full-cloth hard cover bears a moisture stain around the spine head, some surface loss along the heel edges, the sides of the spine, and in the gutters, light specking and spots of finish loss on the back, and softening and wear with spots of fraying at both spine ends and all corners, otherwise bright and lovely. Dustjacket shows a long, mostly closed tear at the lower front, neatly mended from the inside with rice paper, which also fills in for an inch and a half material loss around the spine heel, smaller open tears at the spine head and corners, and an open chip at the right rear; the spine shows some fading; there are some remaining open tears and chips along head and heel edges, surface scuffs along the spine sides and foreedges, a light water stain at the upper front and another at the left rear continuing onto the interior flap, otherwise still attractive and sound, now protected in a removable, clear sleeve. 62pp., illustrated, with photo endpapers. The story of Franklin Roosevelt's popular Scottie, Fala; Margaret Stuckey, one of the authors, is the cousin who gave the dog to the President. Laid in at front is an envelope containing an illustrated postcard of Fala, with a gift inscription from when the book was given to another Scottie and his family, as well as a greeting card with a silhouette of a Scottie.
