About this title

Synopsis:

The best-seller that presents the living traditions and the design highlights of Western life. Collector's treasures of cowboy gear, leather goods, rugs and textiles, and even 1950s "Cowboyana" are here in rich detail, along with adobe homes, mountain cabins, and historic ranches; round-ups and rodeos; and wagon wheels and movie stills. Full-color photographs.

From Library Journal:

Although the Library of Congress gives this book a social science classification, it is hard to decide whether it is a decorating book, a history of the Old West (meaning the territory west of the Mississippi, extending for Montana down to the Mexican border), a travelog, or a guide to cowboy antiques and memorabilia. Despite numerous vintage and contemporary photographs--which, incidentally, are superbly reproduced--this book is annoyingly superficial, a paean to a trendy but artificial "New West" lifestyle. On the plus side, you can find a state-by-state directory of stores, museums, artisans, and national parks and a list of rodeos, fairs, and festivals. Librarians may want to skip this title, but the authors' previous success with Santa Fe Style (Rizzoli, 1986) will probably make it a high-demand item.
