About this Item

155 pp, 16 pp. glossy b&w photos. Nearly new, no markings. Slight rubbing on edges. Light edgewear to dust jacket, tiny tear to top of jacket spine. Subtitle: "Being a rambling and egotistical account of the London Symphony Orchestra's engagement at Daytona Beach, Florida, in July-August 1967. Priestly spent a month in Daytona Beach, rubbing shoulders daily with LSO musicians and Daytonans who came to their concerts. He writes with sharp wit about such guest performers as Itzhak Perlman, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Andre Previn. The LSO biannual visits to Daytona continued for 40 years, subsidized heavily by newspaper publisher Herbert "Tippen" Davidson Jr. His newspaper partner, Cox Newspapers in Atlanta, eventually objected to the project and won a court ruling that discontinued the support. This scarce book recounts an era when Daytona Beach aspired to small-town cultural greatness. The book was first published in UK by Morrison and Gibb Ltd. Size: 4to -- 10 in Tall.
