About this Item

The bulk of the novel was written in 1897, and takes place during the last years of the Cleveland presidency. The author states in the foreword that the novel presents "a picture of feelings and relations really subsisting between North and South just before that crisis in our history which brought the two sections, let us hope forever, into a common enthusiasm for a common national cause." The crisis referred to was the Spanish-American War. Mary McNeill served as secretary to her husband, Ernest Fenellosa, curator of Oriental art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Four pages of ads in the back. Small 8vo. viii, 375, [7 (3 blank)] pp. Publisher's green cloth, with gilt lettering and floral decorations stamped in gold and two shades of green.
