About this Item

First edition. Hradcover in pale green cloth (also seen in maroon, priority undetermined but the pale green much less common). 330 pp. With 16 plates including a frontispiece portrait of the author. The scarcest of the contemporary books on the Titanic disaster, written by one of the survivors. The author describes the last day on the boat, the actual collision and foundering, struggling in the water, the night spent on the bottom half of an upturned lifeboat, and comments on the "women and children" first issue. His considered the most complete account of the disaster by a survivor. Gracie did not actually survive the ordeal, dying in December of 1912 from the lingering effects of hypothermia; this book was actually issued posthumously. Good, generally bumped about the egdes, wear at the spine ends and bumping along the spine. Small ownership lable as well as name front pastedown. There is a pencil notation on the bottom of the contents page noting the "death of Col. Gracie eight months after the distaster". Bookseller Inventory # E17231B
