The operation for arthrodesis of the hip, is named after the British orthopedic surgeon Gathorne Robert Girdlestone (1881-1950), a graduate of St Thomas's Hospital and an orthopedic surgeon at the Wingfield Morris Orthopedic Hospital, later the Nuffield Orthopedic Center. He also described an operation for spinal fixation in cases of Pott's disease in 1931. He was the first professor at the Orthopedic Center at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, in 1937.
