About this title

When I flew into the first village visited in my new job I felt as if I'd bee spirited into totally different world. It was a crisp autumn day, and I was in a twin-engine airplane with only the pilot and one other passenger. This was my first experience in the bush. In my new job of providing health care to a number of villages in rural Alaska.I was 60 years old, and only four years before I had returned to school to obtain my postgraduate degree in public health. After teaching nursing for three years, I had come to Alaska to take this new job. It proved to be exciting and challenging, and the stories in this book relate many experiences I encountered, as well as tales of special friendships I made with the Native people of Alaska. I learned to love them, and they in turn became my very good friends

About the Author:

Juanita Nottingham is a retired public health nurse who, at the age of 60 years to began providing health care to villages in the remote areas of Alaska. Living in Montana when her last child went off to college she went back to school to get her Masters' degree in Nursing Education. About that time her husband had a stroke, but she didn't let that stop her. She took her invalid husband, went to college and got her MSN. She decided to major in public health—a field she had always been interested in—that would give her two options—teaching or providing health care as a public health nurse. After teaching public health in a university for three years, she applied for a position of itinerant public health nurse in Alaska. So she began a new career providing health care and health education to nine villages in Alaska. It was totally different than anything she had ever done before, but exciting and challenging.
