Book Description 1st.ed., 1936. 279 pp., port. frontis., + 9 other plates. Light blue cloth ; black lettering. 22 x 14cm. Notes & annotations chiefly in pencil. V.G. Owen Rutter (1899-1944), was an authority on the BOUNTY affair and before the war he wrote this excellent biography of one of the mutiny’s main participants. The book is divided into six chapters, each covering a period of Bligh’s naval career. Chapters I & II – The Midshipman and The Sailing Master – cover the years 1762 to 1781 when Bligh served as a captain’s servant, A.B., midshipman and master. Chapter III – The Lieutenant – covers the years 1781 to 1790 and includes the mutiny in the BOUNTY. Chapter IV – The Captain – takes us from 1790 to 1805, the year he went on half-pay. This period covers his experiences during the 1797 Spithead Mutiny and his fighting under Nelson at Copenhagen in 1801. Chapter V – The Governor – covers the years 1805 to 1810 and deals with his third mutiny - in Australia. Finally, Chapter VI – The Admiral – covers the years 1810 to his death in 1817. Illustrated with 10 plates, Rutter also provides a useful list of Bligh’s services in the Royal Navy and a family pedigree. Seller Inventory # C145B207
