About this Item

With frontispiece, 10 (of 11) photographic plates, and a folding map. Original cloth, stained and faded; interior very good, with some damage to front paste-down where bookplate was removed. Illegible signature on the half title, dated 1933. First edition. In the author's own words, "this book is a record of many months of travel. It is not a learned treatise, I have not tried to make an encyclopaedia of facts, nor a logical study of politics, antiques or history. But I have taken my reader as my fellow traveller." Nevertheless, Armstrong traveled and wrote about Turkey during a transformative period in the country's history under their charismatic first President, Mustafa Kemal (later Ataturk). His portrait even graces the frontispiece. Bookseller Inventory # 14935
