Book Description GCF Books, Philippines, 1978. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Turn of the Century by Gilda Cordero-Fernando and Nik Ricio. Very large hard cover with illustrated jacket. Stated first printing 1978. 264 pages with ribbon placemark. Profusely illustrated with (300) photos in black and white and color. Label from Philippine bookstore affixed to front jacket flap. "The years between 1890 and 1910 are significant to the Filipino because more than 50 years of Spanish rule came to and end, the first Philippine republic was inaugurated and obliterated, and the American occupation of the country was firmly established. This charming book is about how people lived during those times. How did it feel like being forbidden to read Rizal's Noli and evacuating from spot to sport during the Revolution? How much was a live chicken in 1900? a cavan of rice? the rent of a two-story house? Did you know that Manila entertainment included a (very inferior) bullfight? Many of the things we now take for granted were first introduced during the era- the Philippine flag, ice cream, the motor car, the Padre Faura barometer, the telephone (you'll even know who got the number "1"). Maybe you'd like to know what the white man thought and wrote about us." (excerpt from jacket flap). Book in very good condition with prior author's name and lengthy note of thanks dated March 1983 to a host on inner blank front page. No other writing or markings. Very colorful dust jacket has fading, marks and tears. In protective jacket now. Fascinating book. Bookseller Inventory # 007270
