Book Description Chatto and Windus London, 1875. Folio, 18"x13" (45.5x33cm). A complete, but disbound and damp-affected copy. Gutta percha perished, contents loose in near-contemporary binding. Portrait frontispiece; title-page with vignette printed in red & black; pp(2),XXX,94,(2) with 60 guarded plates. All edges gilt. Paper guard between frontispiece and title-page toned and densely spotted. Wide margins of frontispiece lightly but quite densely spotted, a little more deeply so towards gutter edge of inner margin; lower- & gutter edges a little creased. Title-page faintly spotted. First 40 or so plates in conditions ranging from VERY GOOD+ to GOOD, the majority very good; images unaffected by mainly faint & sparse spotting in margins, faint dampstains confined to single corners of margins, and occasional minor dampstains at outer edges of margins; plates Death of Nelson, Battle of Trafalgar, and two views of Rome in very good condition, two views of Venice in good condition (one of which with dampstain overlapping one corner of image). Thereafter, plates (and text) deteriorating in condition from GOOD- to FAIR-; with larger dampstains at one and occasionally two corners of margins, minor dampstains at edges, and eventually light soiling and occasional light mildew spots over affected areas; dampstains extending to image corners on eight or so plates; a further three views of Venice - two in good- condition, the other in fair condition. Paper guards throughout variably toned and/or spotted and/or creased. A number of outer edges of both text and plates a little creased and/or nicked and/or toned and/or dust-marked. Half dark green leather binding with green cloth-covered boards, original endpapers. Spine with five raised bands, and with lettering, minor decorations and rules in gilt; front board titled in gilt, both front & rear with gilt rules at leather borders. Spine a little rubbed, with a few fairly minor grazes; front hinge rubbed, with noticeable surface loss. Rear board dampstained to a height of up to 4½" from lower edge; both front & rear with outer corners and lower edges a little rubbed. Binding solid; text generally clean; a good proportion of plates in very good condition, the others not beyond redemption by correct treatment. FAIR copy.
