About this title

Synopsis:

As the new year begins, I have 2 new tutoring students for the 2 English sections of the GED, two young white men in their early 20s who dropped out of high school and now want to earn their diploma equivalency. I have been doing this volunteer work for the director of the Abington Library adult literacy program for 10 years, since 1995, 4 years after retiring from a full-time job teaching English to high school seniors. One of the new students can handle the material. One can't, and he is soon gone, replaced by another candidate. For several years I tutored and delivered Meals on Wheels several mornings a week but I stopped delivering because of scheduling conflicts. The director of Meals visits me at my home. She is desperate for drivers. Couldn't I schedule the delivering and tutoring to accomplish both. I agree to try, and I'm able to accommodate the needs of both directors. I experience aches and pains many days, part of ageing. My twin sister and I turn 80 in September. I am planning to make a dinner for her and our 4 younger brothers, all retired, all well, all living in the Philadelphia area. My life style includes a great deal of reading when I'm home or at a doctor's office, etc., and includes a great deal of listening to music when I'm home or driving Meals. My next two students are a white woman and a black man in their early 20s. The woman is good, the man is excellent. Before my sister's visit for 2 weeks (she and her husband are going to spend a few days in Washington, D.C., and New York), I attend two reunions, one gathering of my students who graduated in 1970 and are now in their early 50s (a few are grandparents), the other a gathering of campers and staff at a camp where I worked for 20 summers.
