First edition. Hardcover in black cloth lettered in silver. 412 pp. Illustrated with photographic plates. Fine, silver stamping bright, bit of shelf wear top edge. In the scarce original dust jacket, very good with some shallow edge chipping and a small round darkened peel to the front panel. Original $3.00 price intact on l;ower front flap. The memoirs of the warden of New York State's Sing Sing prison; Lawes served as warden from 1920 to 1941. He was an advocate of modern rehabilitaion efforts and worked to educate the public about the realities of prison life.
