About this Item

Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl "long-playing" (mono) vinyl disc, white-label "Demonstration" Epic Records LM-3491 / XEM-43531 "Not for Sale," very good vinyl record in a very good glossy cardboard jacket, showing a single scratch to cuts 2 through 5 of Side Two. Record plays through this scratch, but it is audible as a mild click to most of those four cuts, and as a thump ( as though someone were striking his thumb on a bongo drum) particularly to the less-loud cut "Imagination." A curious effort. Mr. Lemmon was a much beloved actor, bringing an extra level of sympathy and pathos to many comedic roles which he virtually "owned." He could also sing and play piano a lot better than most folks you'll encounter at a party. Here, he offers six songs and six instrumental piano tracks. The results did not pave the way to much of a recording career. While he sings on key, the producers seem to have added a bit of echo and then mixed both his piano playing and his somewhat conversational voice DOWN under Marion Evans' overblown orchestral "accompaniment," evidence that they felt they were on a rescue mission. Still, a somewhat hard-to-find piece of Lennon ephemera. With typical self-effacement, Lemmon (who played piano at a joint called the "Old Knick" on Second Avenue while seeking work as an actor) admits in the liner notes "I hadn't gotten anywhere with my own compositions. My melodies were invariably wide, rangy, and considered not commercial." Here reduced from $35. Bookseller Inventory # 003473
