He ended up in the hands of the Governor of Vermont , bought his freedom with the payment of two bulls , and married the Governor's daughter . He served in the Congress for four years from Vermont and for eight years from Kentucky . He then made his way to Missouri and Arkansas and ran for Congress in both states . He failed in Missouri but was elected as Arkansas' first Congressman . Unfortunately , he died on his way to Washington to represent his third state in the House .
