About this Item

First edition. Dark brown textured cloth with spine stamped in gilt; 180 pps. with index of distances and historical appendix. Photographic frontis of Washington's Headquarters on the night of December 25th, 1776. IN THE EXTREMELY RARE DUST WRAPPER, PLAIN EXCEPT FOR THE SPINE PRINTING WHICH DUPLICATES THE LETTERING ON THE SPINE OF THE BOOK. The author recounts a "canoe cruise" vacation down the Delaware River from its headwaters above Port Jervis, New York to the falls at Trenton, New Jersey. Filled with descriptive sections of fish, scenery, logging, habitation, various towns and portages as well as tips for fellow canoe travelers. Some of the places through which Hoff passed on his journey include Water Gap, Easton and Phillipsburg, Mongaup Falls, Lambertville, Erwinna, Washington's Crossing and others. A exemplary tight, fine, unworn copy, fore edges uncut and many leaves unopened, very outer edges of the pages are dusty; spine gilt still bright. The rare dust wrapper (which we had not before encountered) is evenly soiled on front panel and spine, rather less so on the rear panel, and is somewhat toned at the spine. The combination of a truly scarce book, a collected printer (Trenton's Brandt Press) and the never-encountered dust jacket make this a very highly desirable piece. Bookseller Inventory # D9946
