About this Item

Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections Volume 116, No. 3, August 30, 1951. Publication 4021. Stapled booklet in brown paper wraps. 71 rough-cut pages. Black & white illustrations. 1 fold-out table. Bibliography. ~~ In clean, unmarked condition, with a single, short 1/2" clean tear on bottom edge of front wrap with no paper or color loss. A few pages have a paper clip impression at top edge, and a few pages have some very pale foxing splotches on the outer edge, not affecting text. This is minor. ~~ The Kensington rune stone was discovered in 1898, and bears an inscription that has been estimated to date back to about A.D. 1300, and tells of a voyage of discovery originating in Scandinavia. For decades the stone was the subject of controversy regarding its origins and authenticity. The present monograph was originally published in the Danish scholarly publication Danske Studier in 1946-47, after which it was translated into English and published in the current form. It provides a thorough analysis regarding the authenticity of the Kensington stone in Minnesota, using the Kingigtorssuaq stone in Greenland for comparison, and suggests that the inscription may indeed be authentic. In the years immediately following this, additional studies were produced which effectively declared the Kensington stone to be a fraud. Though most Scandinavian studies scholars now consider the stone not to be genuine, the controversy has never entirely ended, with additional reports published in recent years which declare the stone to be a true artifact. 9 3/4" Tall.
