About this title

Synopsis:

Two Who Were There is Margaret Nowak's biography of her husband and his union organizing activities on behalf if the emerging United Autoworkers Union. One of the first five organizers hired by the UAW, Nowak played a key role in organizing ethnic populations, particularly those from Eastern Europe.

Stanley Nowak also served in the Michigan State Senate for ten years as the state's first labor legislator. In his 1941 campaign for Detroit common council, Nowak ran with Charles C. Diggs, Sr., bringing together black and white people of all levels in a common endeavor. Twice during his lifetime, Nowak was threatened with denaturalization and deportation because of his union and political activities. The first attempt was dropped when the United States Attorney General interceded. The second, coming during the McCarthy era, was finally settled in a Supreme Court decision in 1958 with a decision that saved the citizenship of thousands of other activists.
