About this Item

Two handwritten letters from a Mary W (or M) Tolver (or Colver) apparently to her brother Hosea. Dated October 5 and 6, 1863 and written in Providence, Rhode Island. 5x8 inches. The first is 4 pages long and the second is a follow up to the first, being 1 pages long. Both letters address circumstances surrounding a machine being built, at one point referred to as Thomas's Machine. A Horatio Morrell is mentioned as the one to help completing the machine. Ms. Tolver also makes several references to the Burnside Rifle Factory, which was apparently very near her house, and the possibility of housing the machine in its facilities, as well as having access to its mechanics. She also refers to a Mr. Ackerman, who has a 'Booking Business' in the area and who is interested in the machine. Mention of moving the piece to Boston is also present. The second letter follows up on the possibility of housing the machine at the Burnside facility, citing conversations with a few named people in regard to that matter. No mention is made of what the machine does, with various internet searches not yielding any information. VERY GOOD condition, with horizontal and vertical fold creases present. Minor toning and wrinkling. Bookseller Inventory # 008705
