Approx. 8" x 5", on integral leaves; removed from an album with a clean stub on the verso of the second leaf. Bright gives his opinion on Catholic emancipation: "I feel at great disinclination to take advantage of the popular feeling on this point . I can have no objecftion to explain to you my present opinons upon the Catholic questions. The decided judgement of the best and most liberal Protestant philosophers, & even the honest prejudices which assist in keeping alive the rapidly decreasing dread of arbitrary power, I cannot profess myself attached to the Catholic cause. I am a decided friend to the extensive & comprehensive toleration but consider that restraints that leave the sacred rites of Religion unmolested and only provide against the apprehended consequences of suspected doctrines cannot be suffered to violate any of its more important claims." Henry Bright (1810-1873) was a distinguished Britsh landscape painter. He writes to John Wesley Hall (1790-1875), a glass merchant from Bristol. Bright letters appear rare. We cannot find another offer for sale.
