About this Item

This California newspaper columnist and for a half century one of the most popular and highly-paid novelists in the U.S., cranking out almost 100 novels between 1911 ("Mother," her first) and 1955 ("Through a Glass Darkly," her last). TDS, 1p, 8½" X 11", n.p., n.y. Very good. Faintly age toned; 3-punched at left (not affecting text). Typed, double-spaced text of one page (p. 111) from one of her novels. Norris's crossouts, additions and deletions are neatly penned throughout in blue, which makes fascinating reading as you observe the authorial and editorial processes at work. On the lower margin, she adds, "Taken at random from a manuscript -- / by / Kathleen Norris" in her handsome miniscule script. Although the title of the novel from which this was taken is not noted, the subject matter of this page -- a woman named Lydia thinking about death -- the 1917 novel "Martie the Unconquered" seems most likely. From the collection of Albert Johannsen (1871-1962), a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" (University of Oklahoma Press, 1950), the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject, and accompanied by Johannsen's original 8" X 10" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label (partly filled in by Johannsen). Most unusual. Bookseller Inventory # 40838
