About this Item

Typed letter on St. Louis Cardinls Baseball Club letterhead, dated October 23, 1920 and signed in full ink by Branch Rickey as Vice President of the team. One short paragraph to a Massachusetts man "I am already thinking and planning for my team for next year. What do you think about taking the training trip with my cluc. I believe you would have a splendid chance of staying with us. If this appeals to you, let me hear from you at once." Mailing folds and a few light wrinkles. Branch Rickey (1881-1965) had a short major league playing career with the St. Louis Browns and New York Highlanders 1905-07. He went on to manage the Browns and The Cardinals in the teens and twenties before moving to the front office. He is credited with inventing the minor league "farm system" while with the Cardinals. In 1943 he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers and is most famous today as the man who signed Jackie Robinson to a major league contract, thereby breaking major league baseball's color barrier in 1947. Rickey was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. (PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT PROVIDE COPIES OF UNIQUE, MANUSCRIPT, OR SIGNED MATERIALS. AUTHENTICITY IS GUARANTEED.
