About this Item

Noted Nebraska novelist, essayist and photographer best known for his sensitive portrayal of the people of the Great Plains; his best known work may be "Love Among the Cannibals" (1957 National Book Award finalist), though he wrote other National Book Award finalists as well as the National Book Award winners "The Field of Vision" (1956) and "Plains Song" (1980). TLS, 1p, 6" X 7", Mill Valley, CA, 1973 April 18. Addressed to Richard Leekley. Near fine. Exceptional content letter to an Illinois bookseller with a large Morris collection. Reads in part: "I'm pleased to see your extensive collection of the works of Morris, but I also note that it is not complete. ONE DAY, my longest novel to date, was published in 1965 by Athenum. In 1970 Black Sparrow Press, in Los Angeles, published a limited and signed edition of three short stories, GREEN GRASS, BLUE SKY, WHITE HOUSE, and in 1972, WAR GAMES, a novel written in 1951-52." He goes on to describe a couple of titles, and makes this interesting observation about his 1952 book "The Works of Love": ".you will find a reasonably accurate placement of Menominee street, and the number 218. It was there in 1969, but vacant, appropriate to my passion for abandoned dwellings, inhabited by ghosts. The two-story structure once featured a Delicatessen on the first floor, a flat above. By leaning from a distant window one can see the trees in Lincoln Park. In April or May you should find me peering out." Boldly signed in black fineline, along with a couple of brief handwritten postscripts. With original envelope. Bookseller Inventory # 34206
