About this Item

Original Typed Letter Signed by the author, ÒRaymond ChandlerÓ on Raymond ChandlerÕs personal printed stationery in which Mr. Chandler responds to an inquiry from a fan in England about his work. Mr. Chandler responds in generous detail and the letter reads in full: Dear Mr. Lea, Thanks for your very kind letter. The facts about The Little Sister are that I started it several years ago but always had to drop it to do picture (film) work. Hamilton [publisher, Hamish Hamilton], thinking it would come along one year, announced it prematurely. However, it is now done and in his hands, and will be published after whatever lapse of time it takes over there [United Kingdom]. It takes about six months here, and we have no shortages. / The first Philip Marlowe story was The Big Sleep, although under other names he sort of grew in several first person novelettes. You might say all the first person stories I wrote were about the character I afterwards named Marlowe. / As to Red Wind and Spanish Blood (which are cloth editions containing the same stories, although not in the same order, as Five Murderers and Five Sinister Characters), it may be that you already have these stories, if you collect those old pulp magazines. The titles were: Red Wind, Blackmailers DonÕt Shoot, IÕll Be Waiting, Goldfish, Guns at CyranoÕs, Spanish Blood, The King in Yellow, Pearls are a Nuisance, Nevada Gas, Trouble is My Business. / Some of these will be published over there in a Penguin Book. If you lack any of the above, let me know and I may (but do not definitely promise) be able to dig you out a paper back pocket size edition. There are two or three more in another book of which I seem not to have a copy myself. People are always lifting them. But from memory it contained at least three stories called Finger Man, Smart Aleck Kill, a fantastic story called The Bronze Door which had no business in that company. Yours ever, Raymond Chandler.Ó Minor creases from folding, a hint of dust soiling and a couple of tiny spots not affecting the text. Bookseller Inventory # 19562E
