Description:

One half of the famed vaudeville comedy team known as "Weber and Fields," reknowned for its "Dutch act" where the pair portray German immigrants; in 1896 their Weber and Fields Music Hall opened and remained a great success; they split up in 1904, but reunited occasionally, their last appearance together being a 50th anniversary celebration on December 27, 1932 at Radio City Music Hall. TLS, 1p, 8½" X 9", New York, NY, 1932 September 2. Addressed to Gus Hall (noted vaudeville show manager). Very good. On ornate "Weber & Fields Golden Jubilee Celebration" blue and gold letterhead featuring a caricature of them as "Meyer and Mike," Weber writes to this manager with whom they'd worked early in their careers. In part: "Nothing would please us more then to have you with us on the night of September 25th. Please don't say anything to anybody, as we want you to come on as a surprise in your club act. Dear Gus, let us know if you still have the same tights as you had when we were with you in the World of Novelties. When you are in the neighborhood, please drop in here at the Astor." Signed "Weber & Fields" in blue fountain pen in the quite tremulous hand of Weber, who apparently also dripped a spot of ink over the phrase "drop in." (Illness? Alcohol? One wonders. The handwriting is unquestionably Weber’s, but the tremulousness is excessive.) Good vaudeville content, written just three months shy of their last appearance together. So big a deal was this 50th anniversary reunion that the printed "Honorary Committee" list that runs down the left margin is headed by Franklin D. Roosevelt and also includes Irving Berlin, Douglas Fairbanks, Sid Grauman and other bigwigs of the era. Bookseller Inventory #
