About this Item

Legendary Confederate general James Longstreet (1821-1904) fathered ten children, but only two produced children; his daughter Maria Louisa's first born was namesake James Longstreet Whelchel, who graduated West Point, served in France with the A.E.F. in 1919 and with the U.S. Army in World War Two, earning the Legion of Merit; in 1945 he authored "Activities of the Quartermaster in the Continental Advance Section (known as CONAD), European Theater of Operations." TLS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Washington, DC, 1962 March 24. Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Fine. On "The Civil War Round Table of the District of Columbia" letterhead, which cites him as president, Whelchel thanks Gates for inviting him to join the New York Civil War Round Table on a Washington and Northern Virginia tour. "I assure you that it will be a great pleasure for me to join your group on Friday, the 18th of May, not only at the Willard Hotel, but on the tour of the Mosby country." Bold signature in blue ballpoint. In lieu of an image of Whelchel, this item is accompanied by a fine color rendering of General Longstreet by artist Donald E. Cooke, 8½" X 11", published in 1960 by Edraydo Incorporated in Haverford, Pennsylvania. A delicately colored head-and-shoulders image of Longstreet in uniform within an oval portrait against a (what else) grey background bearing his facsimile signature beneath. A fun pair for the Longstreet collector who has everything. Bookseller Inventory # 37441
