About this Item

2 typed letters signed by Christopher Morley. New York City, Dec. 1918. 2 pages 8 1/2 X 11 inches. Christopher Morley (1890-1957) was an American editor and writer. He wrote in all genres but may be most remembered for his novels including "The Haunted Bookshop" (1919) and "Kitty Foyle" (1934). Both letters are addressed to "Dear Dudley." In the first letter dated dec. 12, 1918, Morley writes abut a short play he is rushing to compose and send to Dudley. The play is very likely "Getting Rid of Bill" (also titled "Tickled to Death") which Morley wrote for the Franklin Inn Club in Philadelphia. Morley was a member of the club. The play was performed in Philadelphia on Jan. 17, 1919 and published in the New York Tribune on Feb 23, 1919. In the second letter (Dec. 24, 1918) Morley mentions the very recent birth of a daughter (Louise Morley Cochrane, 1918-2012). He also suggests Franklin Inn Club members for parts in the play, specifically mentioning Yarnall Abbott (1870-1938) and Tait McKenxie (1867-1938). Both letters are typed on the Evening Ledger, Independence Square, Philadelphia letterhead. Both letters have been tri-folded. The Dec. 24 letter has a few spot along the margin. Both letters are clean. Bookseller Inventory # 017934
