About this Item

The noted liberal U.S. Supreme Court justice was appointed by President Eisenhower in 1956; between then and his retirement in 1990 he handed down over 1200 opinions. TNS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Washington, DC, 1986 October 15. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman (1912-98), founder of the noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago. Near fine. On "Supreme Court of the United States" letterhead, the jurist thanks the Lincolnist for a book (James G. Randall's "Lincoln, the Liberal Statesman") and concludes: "I know I'll find it fascinating reading and thank you very much for sending it to me." Bold full signature in black ballpoint. With original envelope. Lincoln held great interest for Brennan, who occasionally mentioned him in speeches and writings; upon Brennan's death in 1997 his coffin lay in state upon the very same catafalque on which Lincoln's coffin lay.
