In 1885 German immigrant Dietrick Lamade founded "Grit" newspaper in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, which became America's largest rural newspaper; upon his death in 1938 son George became editor and publisher of this offbeat, always-optimistic publication -- retaining his father's habot of peppering the news with homespun sayings; committed suicide by gunshot. TNS, 1p, 5¼" X 8", Williamsport, PA, 1958 March 10. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Bruno J. Gianetti. Very good. Slightest bit of age toning. On "Grit" letterhead, Lamade remarks to the parents of a newborn named George: "While I cannot feel that I belong in the 'famous men' category in which you place me, I am most happy to add to the collection you are making for your son, George." Bold if petite full signature. Also, an IPS, 3" X 4¼", n.p., n.y. Near fine. Slight mounting traces on verso. Head-and-shoulders portrait of the bald, bespectacled Lamade in suit and tie, nicely signed and inscribed at lower right: "To George Gianetti / George R. Lamade." Seldom seen.
