About this Item

This Scottish merchant expended his Glasgow grocery into a chain of stores throughout Scotland and then Britain before changing the face of the tea-drinking world in 1890 and making cheap good tea available to the poor working classes; he bypassed well-established wholesale tea buying practices, bought entire tea plantations in Ceylon and employed American-style marketing techniques, and soon Lipton Tea proliferated throughout Europe and America; later a noted yachtsman and serious America's Cup challenger many times. TNS, 1p, 5" X 8", from aboard "S.Y. Erin" ("Steam Yacht"), 1903 June 27. Addressed to Edward J. Sawyer of "The Worcester Telegram" (Worcester, MA). Very good. Paper clip rust mark at upper left; mounting traces on verso. Typed in a green italic typeface rather lightly, but with a signature as bold as -- well, Lipton's Tea. A gracious reply to an autograph request. Accompanied by a small (3" X 4") turn-of-the-century black-and-white magazine photograph depicting Lipton in sailing garb aboard his yacht.
