The nephew (and namesake) of General Douglas MacArthur and son-in-law of Vice President Alben Barkley, this U.S. diplomat fought with the French Resistance in World War Two, being held prisoner of war for two years; he served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan (1957-61), Belgium (1961-65), Austria (1967-69) and Iran (1969-72).
