About this Item

New York. February 7, 1917. [2]ff./[2]pp. Water stain in lower part of both leaves, not affecting legibility, wear at edges. The first paragraph thanks Schulz for his account of the Battle of New Orleans which Street used in an article, the second gives his thoughts on the United States entry into World War I,"I am much relieved by the recent news from Washington. I know that we are not in any shape to go into the war effectively, but I have become so down hearted about the drift of this nation in international affairs, that I'd rather see us go in and get a licking, almost, than to see us hanging around and crawling when the whip cracks from Germany--or any other country. It is a mighty good thing for us that we have not merely got into a dispute which is between Germany and ourselves only! We may get out of this with a whole national skin, considering that about every country is with us. But we don't deserve to get out whole, and I am not enough of an optimist, even now, to feel that we will be thorough. I do not like to see a country going into war under a President who took office as a convinced pacifist, and with a Secretary of the Navy [Josephus Daniels] who is just about fitted for the job of editing a little newspaper in a little town.".
