About this Item

1-1/4 pages. Responding to a query apparently concerning the homosexual relation between the playwright and poet Maurice Rostand, son of Edmond Rostand, and Jean Cocteau. In French. "Of course, I am very touched by what you kindly wrote me on the subject of the scores I composed for the films of Jean Cocteau. But, particularly in the case of Maurice Rostand, I find, alas! it is impossible to provide you the details you wish. Indeed, I knew Maurice Rostand very well; whenever anyone writes on the subject, I always remember him as a fellow infinitely sympathetic, warm, and filled with his poetic mission; but, every time I met him, I must tell you that he always avoided talking to me about the relations he might have had as a youth with Jean Cocteau. Likewise, the latter, with whom I shared throughout the long years bonds of friendship I will not regale you with now, always I believe with care, avoided talking to me about Maurice Rostand. French composer Auric (1899-1983), a member of the anti-Romantic group Les Six, wrote ballets for Diaghilev, music for the movies, and served as general administrator of the Grand Opéra and the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
