About this Item

Small 4to. Green cloth with blue lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 192pp. Frontispiece, numerous illustrations. Very good/very good. Some jacket edgewear and rubbing. A tight, nice first edition of this heavily pictorial biography -- and an interesting association copy, as an enclosed note on Abraham Lincoln Bookshop letterhead (1p, 5" X 8") and signed by office manager notes this was the personal copy of founder Ralph G. Newman (1911-98), whose bookplate is on the front flyleaf. Addressed to Lily Tolpo (born 1917), wife of noted Lincoln sculptor Carl Tolpo (1901-76) and noted sculptor in her own right, she was commissioned by Newman to create a statue of U.S. Grant. Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a 4" X 10" rough pencil draft of Tolpo's sketch of Grant in uniform standing, hat in left hand -- and tipped opposite this is a small image of her son Vince (also a sculptor) standing alongside an actual casting of her 20" Grant statue; and lastly, laid inloose is a color snapshot of her statue of Julia Grant in front of U.S. Grant's home in Galena, Illinois, unveiled in 2005.
