About this Item

New York: Harper, 1893. This is a small, near-fine copy (5 1/2" high) of a farce by Howells from Harper's Black and White Series. Illustrated, in publisher's original white boards stamped in black, with foxing to the front board, else fine. The Unexpected Guests is a tiny effort by the author of The Rise and Fal of Silas Lapham. The action consists entirely in trying to deceive some unexpected guests into believing they were expected, and in convincing everyone else that they "are not a bit late" when they know perfectly well that they are, all while a phonograph in the background is squeaking out a quotation from William Cullen Bryant: "Truth crused to earth will rise again." Sounds like an early Tom Stoppard, doesn't it?. Bookseller Inventory # 6305
