SCARCE FIRST EDITION, UNCOMMON IN ANY CONDITION AND THIS AN EXTREMELY FRESH COPY. This is the author's authoritative and highly detailed description of Upper Egypt as it was in the later part of the Nineteenth Century. It contains a great deal on the culture and history of a people known to very few Europeans at the time. The book was well received at the time of publication, but is now quite scarce. Dr. Klunzinger was a noted German tropical physician and zoologist. He served as the Egyptian Sanitary Physician in Al-Qusair (Koseir) on the Red Sea, whose coast he repeatedly traveled in addition to his many excursions into the Nile Valley. He served here for over three years, and had previous experience with the region as well. Upon his return to Germany, he received the position of curator of the natural history collection at Stuttgart and was from 1884 to 1900 Professor of Zoology, Anthropology and Hygiene at the Polytechnikum Stuttgart.
