About this Item

Kayser, Heinrich J. G. (1853-1940) & Runge, Carl (1856-1927). ?ber die Spectren der Elemente. Offprint from Abh. k. preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin (1888). 4to. Part 1 of 7 parts. 93 [3]pp. 7 plates. Berlin: Verlag der k. Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1888. 276 x 223 mm. Original printed boards, spine worn & split. Minor foxing, but very good. With Kayser's presentation inscription to Nobel laureate Henri Becquerel (1852-1908) on the front cover: "Mr. H. Becquerel / Hommage de l'auteur / H. Kayser." With numerous pencil annotations by Kayser on both text and plates. Boxed. First Separate Edition. The first and largest part of Kayser and Runge's pioneering spectroscopic studies of the elements, published between 1888 and 1893, in which they discovered an important relationship between atomic weight and structure of the spectra. "From the vantage of today, the work of [Johannes] Rydberg and of Kayser and Runge was indispensable to the atomic theory brought forth twenty-five years later by Rutherford and Bohr. . . . Kayser and Runge's lists of the exact frequencies of many spectral lines guarantee their place in the history of science" (DSB). Kayser presented this copy to French physicist Henri Becquerel, discoverer of radioactivity; several of the tables printed on pp. 39-93 bear corrections and additions in Kayser's hand, and he also annotated all but two of the plates.
