About this Item

"The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread"[ROBINSON, W. Heath, illustrator]. PEACOCK, S.C. An Unconventional History of Hovis. Pictured by W. Heath Robinson. Recounted by S.C. Peacock. Macclesfield: Hovis Ltd., [ca. 1926]. Small quarto (9 3/4 x 7 5/16 inches; 247 x 187 mm.). 22, (including advertisements) pp. All leaves printed in black and blue. Ten full-page black and white illustrations.Publishers gray wrappers covers printed in black, original silk cord. Lacking the final [blank? or additional advertisements] leaf. Some light soiling to a few leaves but overall a very good copy of this rather scarce little pamphlet."Perhaps the most complete and satisfying advertising booklet adopting a historical approach was An Unconventional History of Hovis published in about 1926. In its 24 pages the history of Hovis baking from the discovery of wheat in prehistoric times, through the first windmill and the first steam mill to modern methods of production and testing was recorded. The final illustration, which was also published in full colour as a magazine advertisement, contrasted the thin, sickly and fractious family that does not eat Hovis with the plump, healthy and contented inhabitants of 'The Hovis Home'. The differences extend to the cat, dog and caged bird, and even to the family's pot plants." Geoffrey Beare. Heath Robinson Advertising, p.27). Bookseller Inventory # 03017
